Forks and Tom's

Hello all, I hope you are all doing well. I am doing much better. It took me a few days to recover. Monday was spent in bed. I woke up Tuesday feeling much better then went downhill after lunch. I took Wednesday to rest since we didn’t have school. The 3rd year high school students had there version of the SAT. By Thursday I was almost back to normal. The manang’s were so wonderful. One of them made me chicken soup and I could eat all the banana’s I wanted. Yum! Now I have a lingering sore throat but almost back to 100%. Apparently, the flu is going around in the city too. A bunch of the kids, manangs and nanay got sick as well. It seems that most of us are on the mend though.
I had several people ask me about Typhoon Nesat. I had no idea they even named typhoons. It raged here on Monday, but the center of the it was further to the north of us. I guess we had another one yesturday but it wasn’t as angry as the one we had on Monday. Although it did wake me up at night. I thought we were being bombed, the thunder was so incredibly loud. I have never heard the sky so angry before. It scared me.
My mom used to tell me it took two weeks to adjust to something new. She was always right. I hit the two week mark over the week. Sure, I miss my family and friends, but its different now. I’m settled and have somewhat of a routine. I have most of the kids names down. When I’m helping at meals, I know what plate which gets what size portion. And I’ve mastered how to get the grease off the bowls. I know I still have a lot to learn but I’m no longer overwhelmed. I am so thankful that God is faithful to answer my prayers.
On a less serious note, I can’t adjust to no Mexican food. You know you are addicted to something when you wake up thinking how you can mail yourself a burrito. Mom, you think you can sneak a gordita on the plane for me? And Drew Gilberts when I get back, k???  Someone needs to introduce Mexican food to the Filipinos.
Speaking of food, I have noticed the kids use spoons like a fork. And the fork is used to help scoop the food onto the fork. I sit next to one of the little girls at meals and she told me that I’m eating wrong. I was using my fork instead of a spoon to eat. She went ahead, switched my fork into the left hand put the spoon in my right hand and then demonstrated how to properly eat the food. I told her I grew up eating with my fork and she giggled saying that’s silly. So I am going to continue to be silly and eat with my fork hehe.
Saturday was the big day of the week. The rosmarino’s participated in a program to receive new shoes for all the kids. NO one knew what kind of shoes till we got there. It was Tom’s One for One program. I’ve got to say, I’m a fan now. I never hopped on the tom’s bandwagon but seeing it action and how it really does bless kids who are in need was wonderful. When I get back to the states, I too will be sporting Tom’s.
All the kids are pretty well behaved. But they are kids and all have their moments. But on the way home from the getting the shoes, the van holding all the little ones and girls broke down. How they acted was such a testement to how Nanay and Tatay teach their children. We were all hot, tired and thirsty. The big buddies though entertained their little buddies. Some started to sing and others were playing their version of “I spy”. No one had any meltdowns.

Well I will end by saying that I am so thankful for laughter. This house is filled with it. It makes a grumpy mood no more and a happy mood that much better. God Bless and goodbye till next time.

  1. Hi Kels!

It's so good to hear how things are going! I miss the Rosmarino's a ton! It's so true, they are filled with joy and carry a song in their hearts all day long. They gave me joy on days when joy was hard to muster up.

I absolutely LOVE that they got TOMS!!! This makes me so happy, I have a new fondness for TOMS now. Did they get "toms" style shoes or another kind? I bet the kids were so stoked! What fun!

I'll try to email you this week as I would love to hear how you are doing!

    Lots of love,
    Ashley

  2. i've lived in the US for well, 26 years to the day tomorrow--i just realized after reading the part where the kids tell you you're eating wrong, that when i'm home i eat "right" but when i eat out, i eat 'wrong' and company doesn't have to do anything with it either, i'm usually with my family eating out. but it's automatic, out i use fork and in my bahay, spoon!
